Introduction

The School of Artificial Intelligence and Automation (SAIA) is one of the key colleges of Wuhan University of Science and Technology (WUST). Since the establishment of the discipline of Industrial Enterprise Electrification in 1958, this college has gone through more than 60 years of development. Right now, it comprises three main departments: the Department of Automation, the Department of Electrical Engineering and Automation, and the Department of Robotics.

Moreover, SAIA is equipped with several professional comprehensive experimental centers. These include the Engineering Research Center for Metallurgical Automation and Detection Technology (approved by the Ministry of Education), the Ministry of Education Internet Plus Made in China 2025 Integration and Innovation Base, the International Science and Technology Cooperation Base for Intelligent Information Processing and Network Optimization (approved by Hubei Province), the Artificial Intelligence and Information Fusion Research Institute, and the Institute of Robotics and Intelligent Systems (IRIS).

Majors of SAIA

Automation

This major is designed to cultivate students with good humanistic quality, professional ethics, and a sense of social responsibility. It equips students with the essential basic theories, knowledge, and skills in automation. Graduates will possess strong engineering practice abilities and an innovative spirit, becoming high-quality, application-oriented talents. They will engage in scientific research, technology development, engineering design, system integration, and operation management in automation-related fields such as metallurgical automation systems, process automation systems, automatic instruments and detection, and computer control systems.

Key Courses: Automatic Control Theory, Modern Control Theory, Process Control, Electric Drive Automatic Control System

Electrical Engineering and Automation

This major trains undergraduate students to acquire the necessary basic theories, knowledge, and skills in electrical engineering and automation. Graduates will have strong engineering practice abilities and an innovative spirit, becoming high-quality, applied talents. They will be involved in scientific research, technological development, engineering design, production organization, and management in fields like power supply and distribution for metallurgical enterprises, power systems, power electronics and power transmission, new energy power generation and control, and intelligent electrical equipment.

Key Courses: Electromechanics, Power Electronics, Power System Analysis, Power Systems and Automation.

Robotics

This major aims to cultivate high-quality, applied talents in the robot industry. Students will have a solid foundation in mathematics, physics, and robotics, and will master techniques in information, auto-control, computer software and hardware, and algorithm design. They will acquire skills in the design, development, and application of robot systems, with high practical abilities and a creative spirit. Graduates can engage in scientific research, technology development, engineering design, system integration, operation, maintenance, and management in robot engineering fields such as robot core components, robot systems, intelligent manufacturing, and service.

Disciplines of SAIA

SAIA has the qualifications to grant doctor degrees in Control Science and Engineering (rated B-level in the fourth-round discipline evaluation by the Ministry of Education, with a relative ranking of 20–30%). It also has one post-doctoral research center. Additionally, SAIA can grant master’s degrees in Control Science and Engineering, Information and Communication Engineering, and Electronic Engineering.

Research of SAIA

The main research areas of SAIA include Smart Metallurgy, Intelligent Manufacturing, Robotics, Intelligent Detection Technology, Intelligent Stealth Materials, and Power Electronics.

SAIA has significant strength in scientific research. It has undertaken 82 national-level projects, including the National Natural Science Foundation, the National “863” Plan, and the National Major Instrument Special Project. Besides, it has taken on 43 Natural Science Funds of Hubei Province, 64 Provincial and Ministerial Projects, and numerous enterprise-cooperative projects. Among these, two projects won the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, and 27 projects received Provincial and Ministerial-Level Science and Technology Advancement Awards. In recent years, over 40 monographs and textbooks have been published, and nearly 200 utility models, invention patents, and software copyrights have been obtained.
